Xcom Global's international MiFi rentals getting cheaper, Eurotrips making a comeback

No sense in beating around the proverbial bush -- we're huge fans of Xcom Global's business model, and frankly, we're saddened that every single nation in the world isn't yet included in its list of supported countries. For those hearing the name for the first time, you'll be doing yourself a solid by catching up with our review of the service, which enables jetsetters to rent MiFis or USB WWAN devices for international destinations before taking off. The end result is an always-on data connection for a reasonable fee (read: no roaming), and it looks as if those fees are about to shrink in the coming months.

The company has informed us that it'll be previewing "membership pricing" starting next month, giving consumers the ability to pick up a MiFi for $14.95 per day or a USB WWAN dongle for $12.95 per day. The real story, however, is this: second MiFis for two-country itineraries will no longer incur an additional fee, and if you're setting out on a bona fide Eurotrip, every MiFi beyond that will ring up as a flat $30 fee regardless of trip length. We're told that the pricing scheme will be fully revealed in June, and that it's a permanent endeavor as opposed to a trial run. Membership itself will also be free, and while we're still holding out hope that Xcom can nail down a global MiFi solution, these pricing tweaks will certainly make it easy to nation-hop while across the pond.

Giftiki Raises $1M From Tim Draper, Others, To Help You Get Better Gifts

Like a Charity Water plus Kickstarter for everything, collaborative gifting startup Giftiki has raised just under one million in Series A financing today, led by investor Tim Draper and including VC firms Crosslink Capital, GoldHill Capital and Transmedia Capital. Elaborating on payment platforms like Venmo and Wepay, Giftiki lets users send small amounts of money as gifts, allowing recipients join a pool in order to gift their friends the more substantial things that they actually want, like the perfect Lanvin ballet slippers or a Frieda and Nellie bracelet, instead of individually buying less expensive (and less treasured) items from Forever 21, for example. I think this is an amazing idea.

Lindsay Lohan to Play Junior Gotti's Wife in Fiore Films Pic

Lindsay Lohan is joining the big screen Gotti family as the wife of John Gotti Jr. in a biopic of one of New York's most infamous families.

She called her casting in Gotti: Three Generations a huge honor and told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the film is an opportunity to prove herself as an actress again.

?

"I'm really excited to be back on set and clear up all the misinterpretations about me and show this is what I love to do," Lohan said.

?

John Travolta has been cast to play John Gotti Sr., the mob family's patriarch who had a flair for style and a knack for avoiding convictions that earned him the name "Teflon Don." Joe Pesci will play one of his deputies.

?

The younger Gotti has insisted he left the mob life in the 1990s, but has been unsuccessfully tried four times on racketeering charges.

?

He sold the rights to his life story to Fiore Films, which is developing the film focusing on Junior Gotti's relationship with his father. It will be shot in New York and is set for a 2012 release.

?

Lohan made a surprise appearance at a press conference last week and was expected to be in the running to play the elder Gotti's daughter, Victoria. By Wednesday discussions for Lohan playing that role had ended, but the actress successfully lobbied to remain on the project.

?

"I think it's such an iconic story," Lohan told the AP. "I think it's a great story to be told. I'm honored to be working with John Travolta and Joe Pesci."

?

Lohan's role as Kim Gotti has parallels to her own life, she said.

?

"You don't get to see the heart behind the story and the real side of people," she said of most mob movies, which she said veer toward shoot-'em-up fare. "I can relate to that because I think that I've been portrayed in a certain light. I just want to do my best to show what their family really went through."

?

Like the Gotti family, Lohan is no stranger to criminal troubles. She faces a felony grand theft case in Los Angeles after a jewelry store accused her of stealing a $2,500 necklace, and is due in court for a hearing on Friday.

?

She has rejected two plea deals in that case with guaranteed jail time, and could be incarcerated for violating her probation on a 2007 drunken driving case.

?

She said her legal troubles won't be a distraction.

?

"I think in the past, I had a lot of distractions," she said. "I've learned a lot. I've lived a lot. When I'm on set, it's about the film."

?

Fiore Films is making a commitment to Lohan, who is a former Disney child star and once headlined films, but for nearly four years has been known more for making the tabloids than acting.

?

In addition to the Gotti project, Lohan will also appear in Mob Street, a movie based on a screenplay by Chazz Palminteri.

?

"We're very pleased to have Lindsay on-board for both of these films," said Marc Fiore, who is executive producer of the "Gotti" film. "She has been very enthusiastic about the Gotti project, and after resuming discussions with her, we were impressed by her commitment to the film and felt she would be the perfect Kim Gotti."

?

Lohan also said she is excited about filming in her native New York.

?

"The energy of filming there ? it just brings so much more life to the film," she said.

Effective Article Marketing Methods Overlooked By Most

If you have been involved in online marketing for a while, you should realize the power of article marketing. Most beginners to article marketing only approach it in one or maybe two ways, but there is a lot more available to you. There are several different types of articles as well as methods for developing articles. Let?s talk about what you can do for the purpose of adding more firepower to your articles and the ways you can market them more efficiently.

Very many article marketers, if not the majority, look to the article submission websites for their number one source of website traffic. Of course there is likewise the factor of optimizing articles for search engines. You genuinely have to know what you are doing if you want to make article marketing bring you the results you want. We are going to a strategy of article marketing that a number of people claim is real article marketing. We are referring to deliberately writing your articles to syndicate them. You must understand that this involves a totally different way of looking at what you do.

The process of syndicating articles means your content is published by website and blog owners on their own websites. The kind of site traffic that you could get is highly targeted and can be substantial in the long term. It is critical to realize that syndicated articles are really different from the standard article directory article. Articles written for syndication have to be the highest quality in terms of uniqueness of content, and they need to be longer. Here is one more thing, these owners usually know their content topics pretty well. The implication there is they have the ability to distinguish useful content fine.

Posting your articles to article directories, especially the big ones, prior to publishing them on your site and getting them indexed is a great mistake. But there are more important reasons why you need to stick to a certain order of publishing. This slip with the order reflects a misunderstanding in a number important ways. It is important for ranking your site that the article is indexed by search engines on your site first. Then even a fair amount of backlink building is going to make your site outrank the article directory?s location of your content. Ezinearticles and other big article sites, with the exception of Buzzle, actually expect you to have your articles posted on your site already.

If your goal is to be proactive about content syndication, then here is one method that can bring good results. For instance you have created an article you think is fit for syndication. Go ahead and place that article on your site, and then submit it to the article directory sites you want. Do research on possible website where that article could be published, and you should focus on high quality sites. It is possible that some site owners will already have discovered your article in an article directory. If they take you up on your offer, then you can even ask them if they would like to obtain more of your articles.

Indifference: Far And Away The Most Dangerous Human Capacity

A better future is ahead; just follow the kids.

A better future is ahead; just follow the kids.

Omar Torres/AFP/Getty Images

A better future is ahead; just follow the kids.

Adam wrote a wonderful blog post this week. His college students, he tells us, typically respond with a sense of powerlessness when they fully absorb the dire environmental challenges that face the planet. In response, he encourages them to make mindful life-choices, concluding with a flourish of rhetoric worthy of a college-graduation address:

The kids facing this century of change may end up becoming the heroic generation. There will be great challenges and great opportunities for them. There may very well be a new form of culture that needs to be built and they will be the ones building it. The point is, this time around, the process may very well begin not in the vast sphere of global politics but in the most intimate domains of immediate experience.

I'm lifted with a warm and welcome sense of optimism.

And then my mind wanders back to last January, when we had a lively discussion on 13.7, here, here, here, here and here, as to whether humans have a killer instinct, a "beast within."

We went round and round. Alternatives were considered. Maybe humans are vulnerable to being manipulated into doing harm, manipulated by fear or greed or tribalism. Maybe killing is just an impulse, not an instinct. And so on.

Commenter Phil P. (@Toasters_R_Truth) wasn't having it:

Hmm, 25 million people killed in WWI, 100 million in WW2. If not a killer instinct, then what?

Russell Grunloh (@boatguy) came right back:

Phil, good point. ?For an answer I'd suggest indifference. ?Deliberately desensitized, detached, anonymously executed ... indifference. ?Far and away the most dangerous human capacity.

Thud.

So when humans are faced with a sense of powerlessness, which we all experience routinely, what circumstances motivate us to engage vs. detach?

?

When I apply this question to myself, when I ask myself why I'm de facto indifferent to issue X, I find myself coming up with a bunch of justifications: Not an issue I'm familiar with. Too busy as it is. Other people are better poised to deal with it than I am. Maybe the issue is more complex than it appears and I don't know how to sort it out. Maybe the problem will go away of its own accord. Yada yada.

It's total flimflam.

Feeling crummy, I next try to find solace in those moments when I've stuck my neck out, walked the walk, made some sort of difference ? however inconsequential. That helps.

And then, what helps me the most is this: I realize that, while I agree with Russell that indifference is indeed our most dangerous capacity, I actually do believe that it's on the wane.

When I scroll back to my 1950's Connecticut girlhood and recall how clueless everyone was about just about everything, how we mindlessly parroted concepts like "Better Dead Than Red" and the "Domino Theory," how my friends were all lily-white and Koreans were gooks and I would have had no idea where to find Nigeria on a map ? when I go back there and then think about Adam's students and my students and my kids and what they've come to understand and care about, it gets a whole lot better.

Margaret Mead can take us out:

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

The People in the Picture: Theater Review

The Bottom Line

Donna Murphy?s customary poise and humor bring some unifying force to a tonally discordant show heavy on clich?s.

Venue

Studio 54, New Yrok (Through June 19)

Cast

Donna Murphy, Alexander Gemignani, Christopher Innvar, Nicole Parker, Rachel Resheff, Hal Robinson, Lewis J. Stadlen, Joyce Van Patten, Chip Zien

Director

Leonard Foglia

?

NEW YORK ? Given the deluge of movie retreads and jukebox assemblies on Broadway, entirely original musicals are always welcome. But The People in the Picture is an odd duck. While it?s ultimately touching and contains some charming melodies, the show?s earnestly old-fashioned blend of multi-generational melodrama, Holocaust tragedy and Borscht Belt humor makes for a lumpy stew.

Chief attraction of the Roundabout Theater Company production is Donna Murphy, one of Broadway?s classiest leading ladies. She plays Raisel Rabinowitz, the star player of a pre-WWII Yiddish theater company called the Warsaw Gang.

The action shifts between Poland in the turbulent decade of 1935-1946 and New York in 1977, where the elderly Raisel recounts stories from her past to her enraptured granddaughter, Jenny (Rachel Resheff). Physically and vocally, Murphy slips back and forth with fluidity and authority between playing an ailing yet still feisty old woman and her tough-minded younger self. Even in this well-intentioned but wobbly vehicle, Murphy?s work demonstrates again that she?s one of musical theater?s most dramatically nuanced performers.

The score marks a late entry into musicals for Mike Stoller, one half of legendary songwriting hit factory Leiber & Stoller, working with the team?s long-ago Brill Building discovery Artie Butler.

Book and lyrics are by novelist Iris Rainer Dart, best known for Beaches, which also is being developed as a musical. Like the 1988 Bette Midler film adapted from that novel, her work here combines syrupy sentimentality with knowing insights into rocky female relationships. The writer also brings a shticky vaudevillian sensibility. (She apparently never met a tuchas joke she didn?t like; not for nothing have politically incorrect Broadway insiders quietly rechristened the show Jewsical!) The comedy to some degree tempers the material?s cloying sincerity yet stops it being as emotional as it perhaps might have been.

The rhymes in Dart?s lyrics are often so shamelessly hoary that you laugh and wince at the same time: deadpan/bedpan; bamboozle ?em/Jerusalem; glamorous/mammarous. The writer?s approach mirrors Raisel?s habit of deflecting the suffering in her life with a joke.

The sturdy ensemble embraces the challenges of the material, and director Leonard Foglia has staged the show with a firm grasp of its constant time jumps, unfolding within designer Riccardo Hernandez?seffective set of picture frames within frames. Raisel?s fellow Warsaw Gang players enliven the Polish scenes and haunt the 1977 sections as benevolent ghosts.

The third point of the central triangle is Raisel?s divorced daughter Red (Nicole Parker), whose thorny relationship with her mother and ambivalence toward her history are explained gradually through disclosure of the hard wartime choices that soured the love between them. It?s far from fresh, but the importance of self-knowledge and of maintaining a connection to the past is well developed as a theme.

Among the supporting cast, Alexander Gemignani strikes a soulful note as a homosexual troupe member who saves Raisel from disgrace; Joyce Van Patten is funny as a former ing?nue still hard-selling her charms despite having stacked on the years and the pounds; and Parker and Resheff make the most of figures whose outlines are familiar from countless weepies stitched out of the bonds and battles of women across the generations.

The story might have been better served as a four-hanky screen tearjerker, but Murphy elevates the hackneyed material. Her Raisel is a difficult woman whose warmth toward her granddaughter contrasts with her needling criticism of her daughter. Beneath that, she etches layers of vivid experience, both painful and joyous. Whether she?s clowning around as the ?Dancing Dybbuk? or reflecting on the cruel tricks of an enfeebled mind in the melancholy ?Selective Memory,? she endows the show with a central life force.

Crisis Averted: Lady Gaga Approves 'Weird Al' Yankovic Parody

For those who hope to one day see a video in which "Weird Al" Yankovic adopts many satirized Lady Gaga personas, all's well that ends well.

All day Wednesday, everywhere from The New York Times to TMZ, reports have surfaced that Lady Gaga had refused permission for "Weird Al" Yankovic to release a parody of "Born This Way" called "Perform This Way." Yankovic himself blogged about the apparent rejection ? and posted the offending song on his YouTube account ? writing that Gaga's people had given him the runaround, asking for the lyrics, then asking for the finished song, then flatly rejecting the final product after he'd gone to the expense of canceling a vacation, booking a studio, paying musicians and recording it.

Yankovic has made unauthorized parodies available to the public before ? including a James Blunt parody titled "You're Pitiful," following a rejection of the "You're Beautiful" parody by Blunt's label ? but he's never knowingly released one on one of his albums. "I Perform This Way" was to be the first single from Yankovic's follow-up to 2006's best-selling Straight Outta Lynwood, and Yankovic wrote that approval of "I Perform This Way" was the only factor holding back scheduling of the new record's release.

Don't blame Lady Gaga, people. She loves "Weird Al" Yankovic.

Thankfully for all involved ? get ready to rest easy, folks ? I received a breathless phone call from an ecstatic "Weird Al" Yankovic about an hour ago; it turns out that Gaga's people have reversed course and approved the parody after all.

That outcome seemed likely as I was chasing Gaga's side of the story for a piece earlier this afternoon ? when I emailed her manager, Troy Carter, to ask why she'd rejected the song, he wrote, "Gaga didn't refuse permission of the record. In fact, she's never heard it and is a big Weird Al fan." Which directly contradicted everything Yankovic had written: namely, that Gaga herself had flatly refused to grant permission, having heard the song. So I reached out to Yankovic, who wrote, "Well, um, I'm baffled. I'll let you know what, if anything, I find out."

As reports involving the apparent rejection poured in, Yankovic's fans mobilized on Twitter, as fans on Twitter are wont to do ? and most of them blamed Gaga, accused her of hypocrisy, and so on. But, given that Carter was now saying that Gaga hadn't heard the song...

Anyway, for those who hope to one day see a video in which "Weird Al" Yankovic adopts many satirized Lady Gaga personas, all's well that ends well; Gaga has now heard the song and approved of its release. And, as Yankovic was promising all along, all proceeds from the song and its forthcoming video will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign. As Yankovic himself writes, "I'm thrilled on many levels to hear this, because 1) I truly respect and admire Gaga as an artist and it pained me to think of her as having less than a great sense of humor, and 2) it means I GET TO PUT OUT MY ALBUM!"

So there you go. Disaster averted!

Lauren Conrad Launches The Beauty Department

Lauren Conrad is launching a site called The Beauty Department. She certainly knows a thing or two about that department, so it sounds like a nice fit.

TheBeautyDepartment (dot) com is a collaboration between the former star of The Hills, her hairstylist and makeup artist, Kristen Ess and Amy Nadine.

After the news broke this February about her new reality show getting the boot, it's nice to see that LC has taken her expertise to a different medium.

How plants grow ? the biology of plant life

The plants are amazing, especially when we ask ourselves how plants grow. There are over 350,000 species of plants, especially plants on land and under water. Everyone has to grow to survive some tough conditions, and can grow to the tenacity of plants when you see them lying on the side of the canyon, or to see their way through the old floor. Their will to survive and proliferate intensely!

The plants are flowers, trees, shrubs, bushes, grass, moss, plants, herbs, algae, andGreen algae. These have much in common. They depend for survival of the species and content of other living things and natural things. You need sunlight (with the exception of the plants of the deep sea), water, air, bees and insects, soil, animals and fire for life. Some pine trees release their seeds only after a major fire need to heat the cones and seeds to open.

Some water plants get their nutrients from the water and survived with no sunlight. In hydroponic growth, plants grown in water rather than justGround, and you can see the growth of roots. The water prosper must have the necessary nutrients, or adding plant food to plants.

To answer the question of how to grow plants, we have to look to reproduction. Some plants have male and female parts, some not, but all on the wind, air, animals, bees and insects need to help the pollination and fertilization. Send to propagate other runners and tubers, or create, onions, sprouts and new adventitious budsPlants through the soil to new locations. Human splicing in agricultural background and a new growth to help in old installations.

Plants, the seeds have such small packages (seeds) that a grocery store and a baby seedlings, similar to contain a fertilized egg, and there is a protective seed coat over the suit. When fertilized through pollination, the seed forms after a flower dies. The flower contains male and / or female parts, which create an egg for fertilization ready. This is the seed orFruit contains seeds.

The seed falls to the ground and begins to soften with moisture until the seeds shell opens up enough to break through for germination with a tap root, root hairs, and the top of the plant begins to grow toward the light and heat. This is the plant design. The roots grow down to find more moisture and the top of the plant is to find food and energy.

Plant food comes from water and soil. Plants take in food and energy from sunlight through photosynthesis andBreathing through the leaves (osmosis). They absorb carbon dioxide from the air in the light of day and release oxygen during the night. It is important to plant the right minerals from the soil. Fortunately, nature can thrive perfectly in most cases, and plants.

If you all that you answer for nature in perfect balance and the question of how plants grow see is a frightening thought, and a wonderful process.

Strike On Gadhafi Compound Damages Buildings

NATO airstrikes targeted the center of Moammar Gadhafi's seat of power early Monday, destroying a multi-story library and office and badly damaging a reception hall for visiting dignitaries.

Gadhafi's whereabouts at the time of the attack on his sprawling Bab al-Azizya compound were unclear. A security official at the scene said four people were lightly hurt.

Monday's strike came after Gadhafi's forces unleashed a barrage of shells and rockets at the besieged rebel city of Misrata, in an especially bloody weekend that left at least 32 dead and dozens wounded.

The battle for Misrata, which has claimed hundreds of lives in the past two months, has become the focal point of Libya's armed rebellion against Gadhafi since fighting elsewhere is deadlocked.

Video of Misrata civilians being killed and wounded by Gadhafi's heavy weapons, including Grad rockets and tank shells, have spurred calls for more forceful international intervention to stop the bloodshed in the rebel-held city.

In Washington on Sunday, three members of the Senate Armed Services Committee said that more should be done to drive Gadhafi out of power, including targeting his inner circle with air strikes. Gadhafi "needs to wake up every day wondering, `Will this be my last?"' Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican on the committee, told CNN's "State of the Union."

Early in the campaign of airstrikes against Gadhafi, a cruise missile blasted an administration building in Bab al-Azizya last month, knocking down half the three-story building. The compound was also targeted in a U.S. bombing in April 1986, after Washington held Libya responsible for a blast at a Berlin disco that killed two U.S. servicemen.

At least two missiles struck Bab al-Azizya early Monday, and the booms could be heard miles away.

A multi-story building that guards said served as Gadhafi's library and office was turned into a pile of twisted metal and broken concrete slabs. Dozens of Gadhafi supporters climbed atop the ruins, raising Libya's green flag and chanting in support of their leader.

A second building, where Gadhafi received visiting dignitaries, suffered blast damage. The main door was blown open, glass shards were scattered across the ground and picture frames were knocked down.

Just two weeks ago, Gadhafi had received an African Union delegation led by South African President Jacob Zuma in the ceremonial building, which was furnished with sofas and chandeliers. The delegation had called for an immediate cease-fire and dialogue between the rebels and the government.

NATO's mandate from the U.N. is to try to protect civilians in Libya, split into a rebel-run east and a western area that remains largely under Gadhafi's control. While the coalition's airstrikes have delivered heavy blows to Gadhafi's army, they have not halted attacks on Misrata, a city of 300,000 people besieged by Gadhafi loyalists for two months.

Still, in recent days, the rebels' drive to push Gadhafi's men out of the city center gained momentum.

Late last week, they forced government snipers out of high-rise buildings. On Sunday, rebels took control of the main hospital, the last position of Libyan troops in the center of Misrata, said a city resident, who only gave his first name, Abdel Salam, for fear of reprisals. Throughout the day, government forces fired more than 70 rockets at the city, he said.

"Now Gadhafi's troops are on the outskirts of Misrata, using rocket launchers," Abdel Salam said.

A Misrata rebel, 37-year-old Lutfi, said there had been 300-400 Gadhafi fighters in the main hospital and in the surrounding area that were trying to melt into the local population.

"They are trying to run way," Lutfi said of the soldiers, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. "They are pretending to be civilians. They are putting on sportswear."

Ali Misbah, a captured Libyan soldier who had been wounded in the leg, was held under guard in a tent in the parking lot of the Al Hikmeh Hospital, one of the city's smaller medical centers.

Misbah, 25, said morale was low among Gadhafi's troops. "Recently, our spirit has collapsed and the forces that were in front of us escaped and left us alone," he said.

Misbah said he and his fellow soldiers were told that they were fighting against al-Qaida militants, not ordinary Libyans who took up arms against Gadhafi.

"They misled us," Misbah said of the government.

A senior Libyan government official has said the military is withdrawing from the fighting in Misrata, ostensibly to give a chance to tribal chiefs in the area to negotiate with the rebels. The official, Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Kaim, said the tribal chiefs were ready to send armed supporters to fight the rebels unless they lay down their weapons.

Kaim also claimed that the army has been holding its fire since Friday.

Asked about the continued shelling on Misrata, Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said the army was responding to attacks by rebels. He insisted that most of Misrata was still under government control.

Rebels on Sunday dismissed government claims that tribes in the area were siding with Gadhafi and that troops were redeploying voluntarily.

"It's not a withdrawal. It's a defeat that they want to turn into propaganda," said Dr. Abdel-Basit Abu Mzirig, head of the Misrata medical committee. "They were besieging the city and then they had to leave."

In addition to the casualties, thousands of people, many of them foreign workers, have been stranded in Misrata. Hundreds of migrants, along with wounded Libyans, have been evacuated in aid vessels through the port in recent days.

One of those wounded, Misrata resident Osama al-Shahmi, said Gadhafi's forces have been attacking the city with rockets. "They have no mercy. They are pounding the city hard," said al-Shahmi after being rescued from Misrata.

"Everyone in Misrata is convinced that the dictator must go," said al-Shahmi, 36, a construction company administrator who was wounded by shrapnel. His right leg wrapped in bandages, al-Shahmi flashed a victory sign as he was put into a waiting ambulance upon arrival in Benghazi.

In Rome, Pope Benedict XVI offered an Easter prayer for Libya. He told a crowd of more than 100,000 Easter pilgrims in St. Peter's Square that he hopes "diplomacy and dialogue replace arms" in Libya and that humanitarian aid will get through to those in need.

The Joys Of Life In A Lookout Tower In 'Fire Season'

Until about fifteen years ago I thought fire lookouts had gone the way of itinerant cowboys, small-time gold prospectors, and other icons of an older, wilder West. Then a friend of mine named Mandijane asked me for my mailing address in Missoula, Montana, where we were both students in print journalism?one of the least timely courses of study in the history of higher education, though we couldn't have known that at the time. M.J. said she'd soon have a lot of time to write letters. When spring exams were over, she'd be off to New Mexico to watch for fires.

I was intrigued, and more than a little envious; M.J.'s letters did not disappoint. She was posted in the middle of the Gila National Forest, on the edge of the world's first designated wilderness, a hundred and thirty miles north of the border with Mexico. On Loco Mountain, she said, not a single man-made light could be seen after dark. She lived in her lookout tower, a twelve-by-twelve-foot room on stilts. The nearest grocery store was five miles by pack trail and eighty-five more by mountain road. Over the course of four months she had fewer than twenty visitors?hunters on horseback, mainly, and a few adventurous hikers. The romance in those letters was almost unimaginable to me.

For years our paths diverged, though we always kept in touch by letter. I left school for New York and lucked into a job with the Wall Street Journal. Her continuing adventures took her to Ghana, Costa Rica, Argentina. One spring she wrote to say she was back in the States for another summer gig in the Gila, this time at a different tower forty miles southeast of Loco Mountain. She knew I was busy, tied to a desk in New York, but suggested I take a vacation and come see the country, for a few days at least.

I needed no further urging. I'd already hustled too long and for no good purpose in the city, and when I finally looked out on that country with two dozen mountain ranges I couldn't name, more mountains than a person could hope to explore on foot in a lifetime, I guess you could say I fell in love at first sight. And what a sight it was: a stretch of country larger than the state of Maryland, nearly 20,000 square miles of desert and forest, sky island mountain chains in three states and two countries. In the afternoons, when M.J. sat in the tower keeping watch, I hiked through old-growth fir and massive groves of quaking aspen. I was unaware of it at the time, but those aspen had grown back in the scar of what was, for almost half a century, the biggest fire on record in the Southwest: the McKnight Fire of 1951, which burned 50,000 acres along the slopes of the Black Range. Much of the fire crowned in mature timber, creating a massive stand replacement?the death of one or several tree species and their total succession by others. Though I could not see it yet, I'd been seduced on my walks by that fire, or at least by the effects of the fire, the beauty of the forest created in its wake.

Around our own little bonfire under starlight, M.J. told me she'd grown antsy in the lookout. She wanted to get out on a fire, inhale the smoke, feel the heat of the flames?and make some bigger money, overtime and hazard pay. Her boss was game, she said, if she could find him someone reliable to take over fire watch. By the time I had to hike out and head home, I'd talked myself into her job. She'd vouch for my backwoods bonafides?atrophied after four years in the city?and I'd fly to New York, offer two weeks' notice at work, and be back before the moon was full again. I knew almost nothing about being a lookout except what I'd read in books, but what I'd read seemed promising. "It doesn't take much in the way of body and mind to be a lookout," Norman Maclean had written. "It's mostly soul."

Since that first summer I've returned each succeeding year to sit ten thousand feet above sea level and watch for smoke. Most days I can see a hundred miles in all directions. On clear days I can make out mountains a hundred and eighty miles away. To the east stretches the valley of the Rio Grande, cradled by the desert: austere, forbidding, dotted with creosote shrubs and home to a collection of horned and thorned species evolved to live in a land of scarce water. To the north and south, along the Black Range, a line of peaks rises and falls in timbered waves; to the west, the Rio Mimbres meanders out of the mountains, its lower valley verdant with grasses. Beyond it rise more mesas and mountains: the Diablos, the Jerkies, the Mogollons. A peaceable kingdom, a wilderness in good working order?and my job to sound the alarm if it burns.

Having spent eight summers in my little glass-walled perch, I have an intimate acquaintance with the look and feel of the border highlands each week of each month, from April through August: the brutal winds of spring, when gales off the desert gust above seventy miles an hour and the occasional snow squall turns my peak white; the dawning of summer in late May, when the wind abates and the aphids hatch and lady bugs emerge in great clouds from their hibernation; the fires of June, when dry lightning connects with the hills and mesas, sparking smokes that fill the air with the sweet smell of burning pine; the tremendous storms of July, when the radio antenna sizzles like bacon on a griddle and the lightning makes me flinch as if from the threat of a punch; and the blessed indolence of August, when the meadows bloom with wildflowers and the creeks run again, the rains having turned my world a dozen different shades of green. I've seen lunar eclipses and desert sandstorms and lightning that made my hair stand on end. I've seen fires burn so hot they made their own weather. I've watched deer and elk frolic in the meadow below me and pine trees explode in a blue ball of smoke. If there's a better job anywhere on the planet, I'd like to know what it is.

Health Controversy: Kate Middleton and Brideorexia: Vitamin G ...

It's natural for a woman to want to look her best on her big day, but when pre-wedding weight loss turns extreme, experts are calling it brideorexia, and pointing the finger at the future queen, Kate Middleton...

0420-brideorexia-wedding-weight-loss_vg.jpg

I recently read a Facebook status update from a friend that read: "Wedding in three months. Time to get skinny." I felt bad for this person, and the pressure she felt to change her body so dramatically in such a short period of time.

TIME recently reported on the new trend of "brideorexia"--extreme pre-wedding weight loss. Experts say it's dangerous, and yet marketers are quick to capitalize on women who want to lose weight before their big day (exhibit A: bridal boot camps).

"Clearly we live in a culture that values thinness, and this is probably the event of most women's lives that puts the brightest spotlight on them," says Dr. Jeffrey Sobal, a professor of sociology at Cornell.

At the core of this news is the future queen herself, Kate Middleton. The 5' 10'' bride-to-be is said to have whittled about 20 pounds from her frame, and onlookers have questioned whether her weight loss has gone to far.

Brides: Are you feeling pressure to be thin? Married gals, did you go crazy trying to lose weight before your wedding?

The Best Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

I don't consider myself a cosplayer, but I spent a disproportionate amount of my youth dressed up as Indiana Jones, Peter Venkman and multiple members of the Three Ninjas, among others. Like most kids whose parents couldn't afford to buy hundreds of dollars worth of licensed costumes, I had to piece together my ensembles. A fedora and a black leather jacket for Dr. Jones; three wire ties strapped to gloves by electrical tape for Wolverine, a Ghostbusters pajama onesie that I had outgrown and was by then provocatively small for Venkman-what I lacked in funding I more than made up for in resourcefulness. But now that I'm a grown up, I can afford the real deal. And that's why I've been geeking out about this Officially Licensed Star Wars Luke Skywalker Ceremonial Jacket with Medal Of Yavin for $132 plus free shipping. -KW More »
