(AP) ? Residents of this remote hamlet that lacks running water and electricity, and lives off cattle ranching and coca-growing were preparing a barbeque for Wednesday's planned handover of a French journalist by Colombia's main leftist rebel group.

Village council leader German Pena said more than 1,000 people were expected for the event, for which villagers built a wooden platform with fresh cut logs and planks.

"We killed six cows and two horses. We heard the French eat horse meat," Pena joked.

French journalist Romeo Langlois, 35, was taken by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia on April 28 when it attacked troops he was accompanying on a cocaine-lab eradication mission, killing three soldiers and a police officer.

He was wounded in the left arm but video images of him said to have been taken the day of his capture and broadcast Monday as a first "proof-of-life" showed him looking relaxed as his arm was sutured and a female guerrilla asked him questions.

Langlois has covered Colombia for more than a decade and was on assignment for France24 television. He has also contributed to the newspaper Le Figaro.

He was to be delivered to a commission including the International Red Cross, former Colombian Sen. Piedad Cordoba and French government delegate Jean-Baptiste Chauvin, who arrived Tuesday night in the Caqueta state capital of Florencia.

It's a roughly seven-hour drive from Florencia to San Isidro on rutted dirt roads that in the current rainy weather develop watery pits that can easily mire four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Reporters with international news organizations invited to cover the handover shared San Isidro's single, partially paved street on Tuesday with small groups of rebels, clad in olive green combat fatigues and carrying assault rifles. The rebels made small purchases at stores or stopped to chat with villagers.

They declined to provide details of the planned handover, saying they were not authorized to comment.

This region of southern Colombia is a stronghold of the FARC, as the rebels are known by their Spanish initials. It is laced with deep jungles, coca plots, fast-moving rivers and villages that appear on no maps.

"War is something we experience almost every day," said Pena. "There have been innumerable battles in this area. We've seen bullets flying on the main street of the village."

The hamlet of about 100 families is 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the larger village of Union Peneya, administrative center of a municipality near where Langlois was captured.

Some of the villagers doing the communal preparation for Wednesday's handover expressed fears they could be targeted by the army for reprisal, accused of collaborating with the guerrillas.

"They think we're part of the guerrilla forces just because we live in this region and for that reason they target us sometimes," said Pena.

At mid-afternoon on Tuesday, a white Russian-made Mi-17 helicopter flew over San Isidro.

Colombia's defense minister, Juan Carlos Pinzon, said the military would suspend operations in the zone for 48 hours beginning Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The FARC, which took up arms in 1964 and which authorities say funds itself largely through the cocaine trade, has an estimated 9,000 fighters. It has recently stepped up hit-and-run attacks on soldiers and police after suffering years of setbacks from Colombia's U.S.-backed military.

The rebels announced in February that they were ending ransom kidnapping, a good-faith gesture made in hopes of launching peace talks.

The FARC released last month what it called its last "political prisoners," 10 soldiers and police it had held for as long as 14 years.

The rebels said in a communique on May 6 that they took Langlois prisoner in part because he was wearing military garb.

The journalist was wearing a bullet proof vest and helmet issued by the military, Pinzon has said, adding that he discarded them during the morning-long firefight with the guerrillas.

Samsung Galaxy S III gets head start on rival iPhone

Samsung Electronics launched its top-of-the-range Galaxy S III smartphone in Europe on Tuesday, aiming to outsell its previous model that helped the South Korean company topple Apple as the world's largest smartphone maker.

The Galaxy S III, which tracks the user's eye movements to keep the screen from dimming or turning off while in use, hits stores in 28 European and Middle East countries, including Germany, as Samsung aims to increase its lead over Apple months ahead of its new iPhone, expected in the third quarter.

Samsung has tried to create the kind of frenzy around the launch that has become the norm for Apple's new gadgets. But some customers will have to wait a couple of weeks to get their phone because of delays in making it in a newly-invented "Pebble Blue" color.

In Berlin, about 50 customers queued outside the BASE mobile phone shop on Monday night eager to be the first to lay their hands on the S III.

Also in Frankfurt some 100 people were in the queue this morning when the Deutsche Telekom shop on the city's busiest shopping street The Zeil opened.

"That's about the same as when the latest iPhone went on sale," said 21-year old Steven Barth, who was taking orders at the shop. "I think our publicity campaign also helps. We are giving away about a hundred Galaxys today, in this shop."

Robert, a student from Frankfurt, who declined to give his last name as he should have been studying, said he had already ordered his Galaxy S III.

"I didn't really like it when Apple was selling the iPhone only via Deutsche Telekom. That's when I decided to buy a Samsung and never left," the 28-year old said.

Other Frankfurt cellphone stores were not so busy.

And in Paris, several cellphone stores did not have the S III and sales assistants said they did not know when they would get it.

"Consumers have been waiting for the Galaxy S III. It's one of the few emblematic smartphone launches this year," said Laurent Lame, marketing director of devices for French operator SFR.

He said Samsung was aiming for a similar buzz as with iPhone launches.

"Samsung has closely guarded the details of the phone to create a sense of secrets and confidentiality that then makes the launch into an event. They do 'teasing' like Apple does now," Lame said.

A spokesman for Vodafone in Britain said the device had been the most pre-ordered Android device in its line-up ever.

Massive marketing
The smartphone, running on Google's Android operating system, boasts a 4.8-inch screen, one of the largest on smartphones ever, and much bigger than the 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4S.

Top global carriers ? from Britain's Vodafone to Singapore's SingTel ? have started to promote the S III aggressively, fuelling speculation the smartphone could top its predecessor, the Galaxy S II's 20 million sales worldwide.

Samsung itself has said it expects the new flagship model to outsell its predecessor.

Samsung introduced its first Galaxy in 2010, three years after the iPhone's debut, to counter Apple's roaring success in smartphones when the troubles of bigger rivals Nokia and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion had started.

Samsung sold 44.5 million smartphones in January-March ? equal to nearly 21,000 every hour ? giving it 30.6 percent market share. Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones, taking 24.1 percent market share.

"The Galaxy S III is a real challenger to the upcoming iPhone," said Francisco Jeronimo, an IDC analyst based in London. "This is likely be one of the most sold smartphones this year, though the real test will come when the next iPhone is launched."

In the race for global smartphone supremacy, Apple has accused Samsung of copying some of its products. The South Korean company counter-claims that Apple has infringed its patents. Both have denied the allegations, and a long-running court saga continues.

Apple plans to use a larger screen on the next iPhone, according to people familiar with the situation. The current iPhone 4S model was introduced last October.

Samsung has launched its own music service on the Galaxy S III, putting itself head-to-head with Apple. It has previously rebranded existing music and video services.

"Samsung is not known for our content services; we make good hardware products but we haven't done much in the content space but that's changing," T.J. Kang, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics' Media Solution Center, said.

"We are doing it to create a better experience for our users. There are things we could do better if we have complete control over all of the service."

More rounded look
In a departure from its predecessor, whose look and feel became the main subject of the legal dispute with Apple, the latest Galaxy has a more rounded outline. It also has voice recognition, dubbed S Voice, which will inevitably be compared with Apple's Siri, and image recognition software that can tag and share photographs.

Prices vary depending on the contract. A model with 16 gigabytes of memory costs up to 189 pounds ($300) under a 12-month contract with Vodafone. A similar package for the iPhone 4s costs 159 pounds, but comes with a more expensive monthly data plan.

Samsung said it will release the S III via 296 carriers in 145 countries by July.

Profit from Samsung's mobile division nearly tripled in January-March to $3.6 billion, accounting for 73 percent of operating profit.

Analysts estimate its global marketing campaign for the S III will likely have cost several hundred million dollars.

Samsung ? whose shares have gained 82 percent since late-August, beating Apple's 58 percent rise ? is now banking on an aggressive marketing campaign ahead of the summer London Olympics to further drive sales. It has said its mobile market share in China doubled after the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"The S III is supported by an unprecedented promotional campaign," said Geoff Blaber, an analyst at CCS Insight in London. "Samsung's timing with the Galaxy S III is perfect."

For monogamous sparrows, it doesn't pay to stray (but they do it anyway)

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2012) ? It's quite common for a female song sparrow to stray from her breeding partner and mate with the male next door, but a new study shows that sleeping around can be costly.

The 20-year study, which is reported in The American Naturalist, found that offspring conceived outside sparrows' social pairs go on to have lower reproductive success than within-pair offspring. The findings throw a monkey wrench into theories about why ostensibly monogamous animals might be inclined to cheat.

Most bird species display some form of monogamy. Bonded pairs stay together for a breeding season, a few seasons, or sometimes for life. But beneath this veneer of monogamy, there's plenty of hanky-panky in most species. Why promiscuity exists in monogamous species is "one of the biggest remaining enigmas in evolutionary ecology," said Jane Reid, a research fellow at the University of Aberdeen and one of the study's authors.

One hypothesis for this is that when a female strays she makes it count by mating with a male of higher genetic quality than her social mate. The result is higher-quality offspring that have a better chance of carrying a female's genes into future generations. This study, however, turns that explanation on its head.

The researchers studied a population of song sparrows in Mandarte Island in British Columbia, Canada. Each year starting in 1993 the team drew small blood samples from nearly every hatchling in the population and used genetic markers to see who fathered each bird. They found that 28 percent of all chicks were fathered by males other than a female's socially paired mate. Thirty-three percent of broods had chicks that were fathered by multiple males.

The researchers tracked both within- and extra-pair offspring throughout their lives. They found that extra-pair offspring had 40 percent fewer offspring of their own, and 30 percent fewer grandoffspring, compared to within-pair offspring.

"These results are remarkable because they are completely opposite to expectation," Reid said. "They show that females suffer a cost of promiscuity because they produce worse offspring through extra pair mating. Rather than answering the question of why females should mate promiscuously, [these results] have blown the question wide open."

Dawn Turner: Can You Keep a Secret?

The juvenile justice system is flawed. It is not only flawed, it is seriously flawed. Rather than serving as a deterrent to a youth's future run-ins with the law and adult incarceration, the juvenile justice system often serves as a training ground for youth offenders.

In my previous blog for the Los Angeles County Education Foundation (LACEF), "Probation Youth: Not Your Problem?" I highlighted the need for providing such young people with opportunities for change once they are released, e.g. school credits, job certification, transitional support, and psychological and health support. Failing to provide these support services will only lead to recidivism and their graduation to adult incarceration. African Americans and Latinos represent an overwhelming segment of the juvenile justice system. The following provides greater insight into the disturbing statistics of our nation's broken juvenile justice system. According to California's Legislative Analyst's Office:

  • In 2005, males accounted for about 74?percent of all juvenile arrests in California. Males accounted for more than 80?percent of all juvenile?felony?arrests.
  • Most juveniles arrested in 2005 were age 15 through 17. Only 2?percent of juvenile arrests were in the 10 and 11 age group.
  • Black and Hispanic juveniles represented about one-half of California's juvenile population age 10 through 17 in 2005, but they accounted for almost two-thirds of juvenile arrests.

Prior to any encounter with law enforcement, African-American and Latino youth within urban communities have limited resources and access to opportunities for summer jobs or extra-curricular activities within urban communities. It stands to reason and statistical support that those already limited resources and opportunities become infinitesimal post incarceration.

How serious is it? According to the most recent nationwide study, "How Does Juvenile Crime Affect Communities" and the National Criminal Justice Reference Service, in 2008, juveniles accounted for 47 percent of all arson arrests and 38 percent of all vandalism arrests. In the same year, juveniles accounted for 27 percent of robbery and burglary arrests, 26 percent of larceny arrests, and 25 percent of motor vehicle theft arrests. Also?in 2008, juveniles accounted for 16 percent of all violent crime arrests, and for 22 percent of all weapons-related arrests.

So the questions are -- What are we doing to stem this tide? What can we do as a society to invest our tax dollars in the positive future of these youths versus investing our tax dollars in the building of more group homes, juvenile halls, and probation camps? Will we become concerned when it comes knocking at our door in the form of a broken in car, stolen purse, or illegal drug activity in our neighborhood?

Our nation's youth, especially in California, need our voices, our advocacy, and our efforts. We have the power to stem the tide of juvenile incarceration. So I ask again -- Should you keep this secret? I hope not. Let's find ways to invest and believe in our youth, and champion alternatives for reform of the juvenile justice system.

Revealing Trouble-Free Self Hypnosis Techniques Programs

This article has been viewed 42 times.

Beyond the reach of millions of people are the psychological counselors and medical professionals that people need to have. The options are so expensive that self-hypnosis is becoming a viable option that many people seek out. It is actually quite easy to teach yourself self-hypnosis techniques that you can do by yourself. But it is very important that you know what to do so you can get actual results. There is a reason why hypnotherapists are trained and certified; so that should tell you something right there. Despite this, there?s good news! You can learn techniques that will allow you to do what they do.

There are certain skills you can utilize that will give your self-hypnosis pursuit more advantageous. Creating a mental picture will aid the most in accomplishing the goal; this process has been used successfully for a long time. This will work well for you if you apply it in everything you do. Your results will be better in the beginning of each session when you are going through the relaxation part. When you have the ability to implement visualizing within your relaxation sessions your result will be amazing and there is lots of supporting information about this if you search the web. Of your five senses, try to exercise as many as you can as you are visualizing. This will allow you to have a fuller visualization session.

If you want to have fulfilling self-hypnosis sessions, you need to choose the best location and time of day. Since you have to really be relaxed in these sessions, then you know what you need to avoid. Anything that is noisy and distracting, and which would prevent you from staying in a relaxed state should be eliminated from your environment during your session.

But you can be creative with this, too, such as creating a special setting. A good location is in your bedroom, with the room darkened and, perhaps, some incense or candles for a calming atmosphere. Look at Go To These Guys for quality info.

People that use self-hypnosis for deeply ingrained difficulties may find that it takes a while to get these under control. Choosing to use a hypnotherapist is another option that may work for you. Doing this is very expensive, and the results that you obtain may not be great. The popularity of self-hypnosis is due to the aforementioned reasons. Patience is absolutely necessary when you go this direction, especially if positive results are what you are seeking. You need to avoid putting pressure on yourself. By trying to achieve results by a certain time, inner conflict will keep you from succeeding. And anything that adds stress makes your job of becoming relaxed for the process more difficult. If you want to learn more self-hypnosis tips, then that is great and a positive move on your part. Any online information that you receive should only be of the highest quality. There is so much information available, and anybody can build a website and publish articles on it.

Which 'Snow White' star looks best at premiere?

Kristen Stewart, left, and Charlize Theron in London on Monday.

Happy "SWATH" Day, Awful readers! If you tuned into the "Snow White and the Huntsman" premiere via the Facebook livestream?this morning (can you believe the gorgeous setting?!), then you saw both Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron rock the enchanting green carpet. Aren't they just to die for?!

Charlize channeled her Evil Queen Ravenna in a long black Christian Dior dress with sheer detailing that almost exposed her breasts (how scandalous, no?). She wore her hair swept up into a perfectly slicked French twist and donned dangly jade green earrings to complete the look. Her smoky eyes and pale lips just screamed Evil Queen, and there's no doubt Charlize looked absolutely stunning. The only thing missing? Her thorny crown to complete the wickedly cool style!

Kristen also decided to rock a character-inspired look -- her black lace Marchesa gown with cascading train and beaded detailing made the badass actress look so friggin' pretty -- and we love the departure from her oft-casual style. And can we just talk about the sex appeal?! The usually Converse-clad K.Stew channeled her inner princess with this lacy fairy tale-inspired dress. The blinged-out back and the sheer-nude cutouts just prove Kristen knows how to make Snow White sexy.

READ: Snow White and the Huntsman Soundtrack: Is Florence + the Machine Team Kristen Stewart or Charlize Theron?

Like Charlize, Kristen also wore her hair in up in a bun, but she sported a messier style. We love the gold details woven through her bun (so fairy tale-esque), but the London breeze kept blowing Kristen's hair in her face! A slick style like Charlize's would have been much better with her Snow White-inspired look.

Our verdict? Kristen takes best dressed and Charlize takes best hair.

The picture follows the rule of thirds, holds a nice level line, and above all else -- is a great picture. Congrats templon, and thanks for the great photo! Check your inbox for information about your Beats Tour headphones, we'll need to know where to have them sent.

As usual, there were plenty of great pictures this week. It really is difficult sorting out the best few, but as someone who enjoys looking at photographs, I'm not complaining. Hit the break to see the honorable mention list.  And be ready to do it all over again next week.

It's a Girl for Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky!

Chris Hemsworth may be a key part of the biggest movie on the planet, but his wife truly gave him a reason to celebrate yesterday in London: she gave birth to a baby girl!

Elsa Pataky and Chris Hemsworth

Multiple sources confirm that Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky welcomed their first child together yesterday afternoon, a daughter named India.

Said Pataky in January, not long after going public with the announcement of her pregnancy:

"Having the person that you love by your side, and starting a family with them, is the best thing that can happen to you in this life. You can't ask for more."

By the hammer of Thor, she's right. We send our very best to this new and growing family!

How to Find Reviews and Articles Using the Search Box

I’ve been reading through the entries for our current Gadget Grab Bag contest. To enter the contest you have to suggest a product that you’d like to see in a future review here on The Gadgeteer. I’ve noticed that there are lots of entries suggesting products that we’ve already covered, so I thought this might [...]

Spotify offers up playlist radio stations and more with latest upgrade

Image

For an upgrade with a fairly underwhelming number like 0.8.3 attached, the latest version of the Spotify desktop client brings the goods. First up is much requested the ability to create radio stations based on playlists or albums, with the click of a button (that would be the Start Playlist Radio or Start Album Radio button, for the record), generating a queue of similar music. A new boost to search brings up music in the main view when you hover over it in search results, while embeddable HTML codes have been added to right click functionality. The service has also added Tumblr posting to the game. The update is rolling out today for Windows and Mac users. More info in the source link below.

Penultimate (for iPad)

Apple's iPad gives you numerous ways to take notes, from typing on the virtual keyboard to writing on the touchscreen with a stylus or your finger. The note-taking app Penultimate (99 cents), recently purchased by the note-syncing and storage app company Evernote, is one of the best iPad note-taking apps around. It's fast, friendly, flexible, and at less than a buck, a bargain, all reasons it's an Editors' Choice. Using the app is second nature because it's nearly the same as doodling in a paper notebook. While the app's touch-based sophistication will no doubt impress consumers, when paired with a touch stylus like the Kensington Virtuoso ($24.99), Penultimate can scale to the professional demands of engineers, architects, and industrial designers. Not to mention that the app is optimized for the new iPad's high-resolution retina display.

The Penultimate iPad app doesn't have a keyboard, so it's not useful for typing notes. And it isn't quite as feature-rich as our other Editors' Choice Note Taker HD ($4.99, 4.5 stars)?although the latter costs five times as much. (For more recommendations, see "Note-Taking Apps for the iPad.")

Broad Strokes
Penultimate's interface looks familiar, though if there's any uncertainty, an interactive walkthrough takes just a couple of minutes to complete. You write in a virtual notebook, filled with blank, grid, or lined pages. The tools, a pen?fine, medium, or broad tipped, in ten shades?and eraser follow your finger or stylus across the page. New pages appear when you flip forward by touching the top corner of a page. Flipping between pages is nearly as smooth as thumbing the pages of a physical book, a testament to the app's speed.

Also worth mentioning are two controls through which you can improve usage. From the settings, you can move the toolbar?buttons for clearing a page, writing, and erasing?from the bottom of a page to the top. There's also a clever feature called Wrist Protection, which, automatically disregards stray marks from a resting wrist. Sometimes, especially when doodling, Wrist Protection can be overly protective, ignoring quick swipes, but when it comes to writing, it's a must.

Finger Painting
Penultimate organizes your work in terms of "Notebooks." Accessing different notebooks is as easy as returning to "My Notebooks" and swiping through the covers. Inside a notebook, you can create as many pages as you like. Unlike a notebook that comes in one style?blank, lined, or grid?with Penultimate, you can alternate between the three paper background styles. An in-app connection to The Paper Shop allows you to buy additional paper styles, such as sheet music paper, should you choose. A few are free, but most cost about a dollar.

If you make mistakes, as you will at first while getting used to writing with your finger or a new stylus, you can use either an eraser or an "undo" button. Multiple undos are supported, thankfully, and a redo button lets you toggle back if you undo too many actions.

The Penultimate iPad app doesn't have handwriting-to-text OCR, as the app Notes Plus ($7.99) does. So if you write by hand, the text stays in your handwriting, for better or worse. The iPad display doesn't tent to make handwriting look any worse than it already is, and if anything, smooths it slightly. Penultimate is fine for quick notes, and amazing for sketching or mind-mapping, but we wouldn't recommend it for heavy writing.

Art Gallery
Whether you're sharing in real time through a projector, distributing sketches as PDFs, or backing up files in iTunes, Penultimate is a capable companion. If you're looking to collaborate with colleagues, you can connect your pad to a projector via the Apple iPad VGA Adapter ($29). You can also share sketches via email. From inside a notebook, you can select either page or a full notebook to be attached as either a standard PDF or the proprietary .pen format.

Exported PDFs look great. There's even an option to include the paper background image, or convert it to flat white. You can import image files into your notebooks and mark them up with notes or just place them on a page and resize them however you want. Penultimate integrates well with Dropbox, Evernote (Penultimate is now owned by the company Evernote), and iTunes.

Your Last Pen
Penultimate for iPad, a PCMag Editors' Choice, is an excellent and ridiculously inexpensive note-taking app that is especially handy for those who have to sketch diagrams and images in their notes. Typists will lament the lack of a keyboard and should stick to Note Taker HD, our other Editors' Choice, instead. Tight integration with Dropbox and Evernote, two big players in the cloud syncing space, given Penultimate a little more utility than it would otherwise have on its own. Now that the product has been picked up by Evernote, we're excited to see what's in store next for this capable and already impressive app.

John Travolta Sex Allegations Contradicted By Flight Records?

A masseur's sexual assault claim against John Travolta (the first one) could be unraveling after flight records suggest the actor was not in L.A. at the time.

On the morning of the alleged incident, Travolta, 58, arrived in New York from L.A. TMZ has photos and receipts that allegedly prove it, and there's this:

He was also seen at a wardrobe fitting in NYC's Greenwich Hotel. According to the lawsuit, the alleged sexual assault occurred at 10 a.m. in Beverly Hills.

John Travolta in a Tux

Travolta's attorney, Marty Singer, previously provided a photograph and a Mr. Chow restaurant receipt as proof his client was in New York that day.

The flight can't be independently verified via public flight tracking services because his plane's flight records are blocked, but it's a strong argument.

The attorney strongly denies all claims made by the L.A. masseur, as well as claims from a second John Travolta accuser in Atlanta, also a masseur.

Each accuser is seeking $2 million in damages.

Okorie Okorocha, the lawyer for both plaintiffs, claims other accusers may come forward as well. John Doe #1 issued a statement today, perhaps prompted by this alleged evidence, insinuating that it - not his story - could be fabricated.

Travolta's attorney calls both accusations "absurd and fictional," and suggested the second accuser based his made-up story on media reports.
