Tech To Watch 2012: Apple?s iPad 3, iPhone 5, and an iTV

How do you top a year in which you became the biggest?company in the world, had the best-selling smartphone and tablet, and inspired an entire category of MacBook Air copycats called Ultrabooks? You keep pumping out hit products?while forging completely new categories.

Expect the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 to hit store shelves in 2012 (potentially in February and September, respectively). Additionally, rumors of an upcoming voice-controlled Apple iTV for Summer 2012 are growing increasingly loud.

?Apple needs to refresh [its] products,? says John Jackson, vice president of research at CCS Insight. ?Every year?and it?s their own fault, really?they have to outdo themselves.?

Why It?s Important

According to its Q4 earnings, Apple raked in $28 billion revenue and $6.6 billion profit. And even though the iPhone 4S sports the same design as its predecessor, Apple sold 4 million handsets in its first weekend.

Michael Gartenberg, an analyst for Gartner, stressed that Apple?s continued success will rely on delivering a compelling user experience. ?Ecosystems are important. Consumers are looking at things like services, applications, cloud functions, synchronizations.?

This is where Apple has excelled, thanks to iCloud and Siri.

How It Will Change Your Life

Details are scant, but the iPad 3 is expected to feature a class-leading 2048 x 1536-pixel display, double the iPad 2?s resolution. Also, look for a new 4G chip from Qualcomm for those models with integrated mobile broadband.

Meanwhile, rumors point to the iPhone 5 having a larger screen, multiple color options, and a 10-megapixel camera. We also wouldn?t be surprised to see a quad-core processor.

Due to the company?s secrecy about new products, it?s almost impossible to paint an accurate picture of Apple?s future. However, Jackson expects a change in design during the next year. ?The iPhone is due for a design overhaul,? he said. He also acknowledged the possibility of a voice-controlled iTV, saying there was great potential to be found in Siri.

Outlook

Now, Apple?s task is to continue out-innovating the competition, especially since Amazon has started to encroach on Apple?s turf with its ecosystem-centric Kindle Fire.

Gartenberg wouldn?t share any predictions, but he?emphasized that Apple will continue to forge its own unique path. ?The market said that the lack of Flash was a weakness for iOS devices and Apple said, ?We don?t think it is.? Then we saw Adobe abandon [its] mobile Flash efforts. People said Apple needed to build netbooks, and the company said it didn?t. It sort of ignores conventional wisdom.?

UFC 141?s Three Stars: Overeem, Hendricks and Hettes

UFC 141?s Three Stars: Overeem, Hendricks and Hettes

The last card of 2011 started slowly, but became must-watch when the pay-per-view fights started. In the last five bouts, three fighters earned first-round knockouts. Here are our three stars from the eve of the Eve. Tell us yours in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Alistair Overeem: Any question about his lack of competitive opponents was answered with a first-round knockout of former champ Brock Lesnar. Overeem overwhelmed Lesnar from the bell, then used knees to attack where Lesnar was most vulnerable. Next, he'll get to match up with Junior dos Santos in a fight that is nearly guaranteed to end in a knockout.

No. 2 star -- Johny Hendricks: You could practically hear the MMA world groan as the Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks match-up was announced. Fitch's last nine fights went the distance, and Hendricks is a top-notch wrestler. Of course this would be another boring grapplefest. Hendricks proved us all wrong with a 12-second knockout of a man with a tough chin.

No. 3 star -- Jim Hettes: Did you expect Hettes to put on a three-round beatdown of Nam Phan? Me neither. "The Kid" is now 10-0, and ready for a step up in competition. After that display, he has earned it.

Chile says part of big forest fire contained (AP)

SANTIAGO, Chile ? Firefighters are making progress against a major blaze in one of Chile's most spectacular national parks, the government said Sunday, and the Israeli tourist accused of setting the fire denied guilt.

Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter announced that light rain and diminished winds had helped emergency workers control three of the six areas of the fire at the Torres del Paine park, though the blaze has burned more 48 square miles (12,500 hectares) since starting Tuesday.

A court on Saturday ordered Rotem Singer, a 23-year-old Israeli citizen, to remain in the region while he faces charges of negligently setting the blaze. Officials said he failed to completely extinguish a fire set to burn toilet paper at a camp.

Singer denied responsibility in an interview Sunday with Israeli Army Radio.

"It's important for me to say that it wasn't me. They've placed the blame on me," Singer said.

He said he was not sure how he became "the main suspect" and was waiting for a lawyer to arrive from Santiago.

If convicted, Singer could face a fine and 41 to 60 days in jail, though Chilean law can allow short sentences to be served outside confinement if the convicted person appears to periodically register with officials.

More than 500 firefighters are trying to quell the fire, which forced officials to evacuate 400 tourists and close the park, famed for its dramatic, snowcapped peaks, through January, damaging the economy of the area.

CDC, FDA say powdered infant formula not tainted (AP)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Four cases of infants sickened by a rare bacteria sometimes linked to powdered formula, including two who died, are not related and parents can continue using the products to feed their babies, two federal agencies announced Friday.

Scientists with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration tested various types of powdered infant formula and distilled water, known as nursing water, and found no cases of contamination by Cronobacter sakazakii.

Four babies, including one in Missouri and another in Florida who died, were sickened by the bacteria that are found naturally in the environment and in plants such as wheat and rice. Cronobacter also has been traced to dried milk and powdered formula.

Two other babies, in Illinois and Oklahoma, were sickened by the bacteria but survived.

The Missouri baby, Avery Cornett of Lebanon, Mo., died earlier this month after appearing lethargic and displaying what his family said were signs of a stomach ache. Tests at a Springfield hospital showed he had Cronobacter, and he died a few days later after being removed from life support.

The infection can be treated with antibiotics, but it's deemed extremely dangerous to babies less than 1 month old and those born premature.

Avery's death prompted the CDC to ask public health officials from around the country to look for other cases of Cronobacter infection among infants. That request generated reports from three other states about their cases.

Avery's case also prompted Wal-Mart and several other national retailers to pull Enfamil Newborn formula, which Avery had consumed before getting sick, from 3,000 stores until the batches could be tested for contamination. Those tests came back negative, CDC announced Friday.

"The FDA tested factory sealed containers of powdered infant formula and nursery water with the same lot numbers as the opened containers collected from Missouri and no Cronobacter bacteria were found," the FDA said.

Powdered infant formula is not sterile, and experts have said there are not adequate methods to completely remove or kill all bacteria that might creep into formula before or during production.

The FDA said it gets four to six reports a year of infant infections related to formula and has not found a powder that tested positive since 2002. The CDC said with recent increased awareness of the illness, it has received 12 cases in 2011.

"CDC laboratory tests of samples provided by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services found Cronobacter bacteria in an opened container of infant formula, an opened bottle of nursery water and prepared infant formula," the agency said Friday. "It is unclear how the contamination occurred."

CDC also tested bacteria in the Illinois case and found it differed genetically from that found in the Missouri case. It said bacteria from the Oklahoma and Florida cases were not available for testing.

Woman who faked cancer for money from Colorado nonprofit gets fine, 90 days in jail

Julie Jane Martin was given at least $10,000 by Cops Fighting Cancer for treatment in Colorado.

A 38-year-old woman who conned the Cops Fighting Cancer Society out of more than $10,000 has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and six years' probation.

Julie Jane Martin of Sheridan, Ore., was sentenced Friday in district court in Arapahoe County.

Martin defrauded the Aurora-based nonprofit during a 15-month period starting in 2009, according to the Arapahoe County district attorney's office.

She falsely claimed to have several forms of cancer including leukemia, cervical cancer, spinal tumors, chest tumors and kidney tumors, according to a news release from the DA's office.

Martin told foundation members that she was undergoing treatment in Colorado.

Cops Fighting Cancer helped Martin pay for lodging and travel between Colorado and Oregon. The nonprofit also paid for other health-related expenses, prosecutors said.

Martin also appeared in a Cops Fighting Cancer video along with cancer survivors who told their life stories, the DA's office said.

In October, she pleaded guilty to one count of theft.

As part of the sentence, the court ordered Martin to pay $10,425 in restitution.

Court rules for telecoms' role in domestic eavesdropping

A US appellate court has ruled that telecom companies have the right to legal immunity for helping the government eavesdrop on private communications.?But in a separate opinion, the court also ruled that customers can sue the government for tracking e-mail and phone calls.

In mixed decisions with important implications for government spying on US citizens, the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has ruled that telecommunications companies have the constitutional right to legal immunity for helping the government eavesdrop on e-mail and telephone communications.

But in a separate opinion, the three-judge panel also ruled Thursday that telecom customers can sue the federal government for eavesdropping on private telephone and e-mail communications.

Ruling in Jewel v. National Security Agency (a case brought by Carolyn Jewel of Petaluma, Calif.), the Ninth Circuit judges wrote: ?In light of detailed allegations and claims of harm linking Jewel to the intercepted telephone, Internet and electronic communications, we conclude that Jewel's claims are not abstract, generalized grievances and instead meet the constitutional standing requirement of concrete injury.?

The case was brought on Ms. Jewel?s behalf by the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco, a nonprofit digital-rights advocacy and legal organization founded in 1990.

"Since the dragnet spying program first came to light, we have been fighting for the chance to have a court determine whether it is legal," EFF legal director Cindy Cohn said in a statement. "The Ninth Circuit has given us that chance, and we look forward to proving the program is an unconstitutional and illegal violation of the rights of millions of ordinary Americans."

Under the Bush administration?s Terrorist Surveillance Program, federal officials bypassed the?1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which required the executive branch to obtain a court-authorized warrant from a special high-security court before engaging in surveillance that might include individuals in the United States.

In January, US District Judge?Vaughn Walker?in?San Francisco dismissed a lawsuit seeking to hold the government accountable for secret, warrantless electronic surveillance conducted in the US for four years after the 9/11 attacks. Plaintiffs failed to offer proof that they had been targeted by the wiretap program, Judge Walker ruled. This week, the Ninth Circuit panel reversed that ruling.
