Google celebrates 10 billion Android Market downloads with 10 days of 10-cent apps (Appolicious)

Google?s Android platform isn?t showing any signs of slowing down. The smartphone and tablet operating system remains the most popular in the world, holding down 43 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, and?today, Google announced its Android Market has surpassed 10 billion downloads.

Google showed off the numbers on its official mobile blog, in which it shows that the growth of app downloads for the platform continues to increase in frequency and volume. Back in July, the Android Market hit 6 billion downloads, which means the Android Market has added four billion downloads in as many months.

To celebrate, Google is marking down a series of apps to just 10 cents per download, with a new batch released each day for the next 10 days.

Today?s discounts include Minecraft: Pocket Edition; SoundHound Infinity; Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD; Swiftkey X Keyboard; Edmondo Sports Tracker Pro; Fieldrunners HD; SketchBook Mobile; Color & Draw for Kids; Paper Camera; and Great Little War Game.

Google says its seeing download rates of about a billion a month in its Android Market, and that?s to say nothing of other outlets that offer downloads for Android devices, such as the Amazon Appstore. The rise in app downloads for Google has been a pretty stark one in the last year, as well. Before July, the last milestone was 4.5 billion in May and 3 billion in March. Between July 2010 and July 2011, the Market saw 5 billion downloads ? but Google notched 4 billion in just the last six months.

Already, Google has surpassed Apple?s iTunes App Store in terms of downloads, and it seems to be on pace to blow past it in the number of apps available, as well. With 500,000 Android activations happening daily, it?s no surprise, really. And the more downloads going through the Android Market, the more developers are going to want to bring their great apps to Google?s operating system, and that means more great apps for us.
