TRIPOLI, Libya?? Libyan rebel forces were converging on Moammar Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte on Monday, hoping to deliver the coup de grace of their revolution but uncertain if the fallen strongman was holed up there.

The fugitive Gadhafi's whereabouts were still not known and it was possible he was still in hiding in Tripoli after it fell to rebel forces and his 42-year-old reign collapsed.
NATO war planes struck at Sirte, on the Mediterranean coast, for a third day on Sunday, a spokesman for the multi-national alliance said in Brussels.
"We're paying close attention to what's happening in Sirte because we know that there are remnants of the regime that are there," the spokesman told Reuters.
Freed Libyan prisoner: 'We gonna catch you, Gadhafi'On the ground, rebel forces also closed in and said they would seize Sirte by force if negotiations for its surrender failed.
Gadhafi was born near Sirte, 300 miles east of Tripoli, in 1942 and after he seized power in 1969 he built it up from a sleepy fishing village into an important city and power center of 100,000 people.
Last stand?
He still retains support and sympathy there, so whether or not he has chosen to retreat to the city to make a last stand, its capture will still be strategically and symbolically important to the rebels as they consolidate their victory.
One rebel commander said his forces were within 60 miles of Sirte from the east and others were advancing from the west.
On the coastal highway east of Tripoli, tank transporters were carrying Soviet-designed T-55 tanks in the direction of Sirte. Rebels said the tanks were seized from an abandoned military base in Zlitan.
Meanwhile, the stench of rotting bodies and burning garbage hung over the capital Tripoli, where food, water and other supplies were running short,
NBC News' Stephanie Gosk in Tripoli described how the city was struggling to cope with the growing number of corpses.
"There are so many unclaimed bodies in the hospitals and morgues that it has gotten to point where they are just burying them," she said.
At a public cemetery visited by a NBC News crew, a crew of about 15 men were burying the bodies. Each was photographed and checked for identification before being buried, Gosk reported.
Many corpses have been found, some of slain Gadhafi soldiers, others the victims of killings in cold blood.

Mindful of preserving their image to the world and stung by accounts that captured Gadhafi loyalists have been found dead with their hands tied behind their backs, the rebel leaders sent a text message urging followers not to abuse prisoners.
"Remember when you arrest any follower of Gadhafi, that he is like you, that he has dignity like you, that his dignity is your own dignity, and that it is enough humiliation for him that he is already a prisoner," it said.
40,000 prisoners missing?
Rebel military spokesman Colonel Ahmed Bani said there was concern for the fate of 40,000 prisoners who he said had been detained by Gadhafi's forces and who were still unaccounted for. It was possible some were being held in underground bunkers in Tripoli that rebels had been unable to locate.
Sarah Leah Whitson, of Human Rights Watch, said: "The evidence we have been able to gather so far strongly suggests that Gadhafi government forces went on a spate of arbitrary killing as Tripoli was falling."
Outside of Tripoli, a rebel military commander in Misrata, told Reuters: "The front line is 30 km (19 miles) from Sirte. We think the Sirte situation will be resolved peacefully, God willing."
"Now we just need to find Gadhafi. I think he is still hiding underneath Bab al-Aziziyah like a rat," the commander Jamal Tunally said, referring to Gadhafi's Tripoli compound that rebels overran on Tuesday.

"We're going slowly," spokesman Mohammad Zawawi told Reuters. "We want to give more time for negotiations, to give a chance for those people trying to persuade the people inside Sirte to surrender and open their city."
The rebel leadership sought to establish control in the capital after days of confusion and sporadic skirmishing with the remnants of Gadhafi's forces.
Gadhafi is on the run and the fear among his foes is that he intends to lead an insurgency against them.
The National Transitional Council, recognized by dozens of states as Libya's legitimate government, rejected any idea of talks with him, saying he was a criminal who must be brought to justice.
"We did not negotiate when we were weak, and we won't negotiate now that we have liberated all of Libya," NTC information minister Mahmoud Shammam told a news conference.
The Associated Press quoted Gadhafi's spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, as saying Gadhafi was still in Libya and wanted to discuss forming a transitional government with the NTC.
NTC officials say Gadhafi, his son Saif al-Islam and his spy chief should be tried in Libya, although they are wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

In the west, Tunisian authorities reopened the main border crossing into Libya, restoring a supply route for Tripoli, after Gadhafi forces were driven out on Friday.

Trucks loaded with food and other goods were already moving across the Ras Jdir crossing toward Tripoli, about two hours' drive away.

Tripoli residents queued for bread or scoured grocery shops for food. Many took a stoical view of their plight.
"This is a tax we pay for our freedom," said Sanusi Idhan, who was waiting to buy food.

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian markets opened higher Tuesday, as investors took heart from strong consumer spending in the U.S. and a merger of two major banks in debt-stricken Greece.
Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1.2 percent to 8,956.83. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 2.1 percent to 20,274.20, and South Korea's Kospi index was 1 percent higher at 1,847.98. Australia's S&P ASX 200 rose 0.7 percent at 4,292.80.
The dollar was weaker against the yen and the euro.
European shares jumped Monday after Greece's second- and third-largest lenders agreed to combine, creating the country's largest bank. Greece's government and central bank have been urging banks to merge, saying it would help them survive.
Banking stocks have since welcomed the merger. Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. rose 3.3 percent, while Bank of China Ltd. gained 3.2 percent.
Meanwhile, China Construction Bank Corp. jumped 4.3 percent, a day after Bank of America Corp. rose 8.1 percent after saying it would sell half of its stake in the Chinese bank.
In the U.S. on Monday, stocks rose broadly after it became clear that Tropical Storm Irene had caused far less damage than many had feared. Insurance stocks rose sharply as analysts lowered their estimates of how much damage the storm would cause.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 2.3 percent to close at 11,539.25. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.8 percent to 1,210.08. The widely used market benchmark is now up 8.1 percent since Aug. 8, when it hit low for the year because of a downgrade of the U.S. government's credit rating.
The technology-focused Nasdaq composite index rose 3.3 percent to 2,562.11.
An increase in consumer spending helped push stocks higher. The government reported that spending rose 0.8 percent in July. It was a sharp turnaround from June, when Americans cut spending 0.1 percent, the first decline in 20 months.
In currencies, the euro rose $1.4516 from $1.4505 late Monday in New York. The dollar slipped to 76.87 yen from 76.95 yen.
Benchmark oil for October delivery rose 35 cents to $87.62 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.90 to end at $87.27 per barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

Two weeks after predicting?that Texas Gov. Rick Perry will oust President Barack Obama from the White House in 2012, KISS bassist Gene Simmons suggested that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would make a fine running mate.
In a series of tweets Friday, Simmons waded back into political waters by suggesting the Perry?Rice presidential ticket.

Simmons went on to explain why he views Condi favorably.

To the avid listeners of Dubstep, these sounds are commonly attributed to most of their favorite songs. What is ?Dubstep? exactly? According to UrbanDictionary.com, it is the noise of Transformers engaging in certain human activities. Sophomore Reid Ferguson said of the genre: ?I think it?s a genre that?s mostly used for comedy. A friend of mine told me that if you play it at a party or something no one can dance to it. So everyone just flounders around awkwardly.? Dubstep is a subgenre of electro-house music. This techno-based music originated in the late 1990s in London, England. With the coming of the 21st century, what began as an underground music scene quickly grew into mainstream popularity.
?Filthy? Characteristics
?Bro, this song is so dirty? or ?filthy? generally goes the jargon by which Dubstep fans commonly describe their favorite songs. What is it about these songs that sanction them to a level of general uncleanliness? Its overall sound has been described as tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines repeated drum patterns, clipped music samples, and the occasional indiscernible vocals (?Explore Music: Dubstep?. Allmusic. Rovi Corporation). Dubstep rhythms tend to be in the 138-142 beats per minutes range. The most recognizable feature of Dubstep is the wobble bass. The wobble bass is created by using a low frequency oscillator to manipulate aspects such as volume and cut-off, resulting in that ?WUBWUBWUB? sound. When asked about his opinion of the music, Sophomore Bradley Frizzell said, ?I like some songs but most of it sounds too electronic and computerized for me.?

Dubstep started to spread beyond small local scenes in late 2005 and early 2006. Simultaneously, the genre was receiving extensive coverage in music magazines such as The Wire and online publications like Pitchfork Media, with a regular feature entitled, The Month In: Grime/Dubstep. Today, mainstream pop artists such as Rihanna and Britney Spears are beginning to utilize Dubstep in their songs. Rihanna?s Rated R album contained three dubstep tracks. Britney Spears? single ?Hold It Against Me? also has some traces of Dubstep to it. Twenty expectant military wives of submariners assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron Two boats received a once-an-a-lifetime experience when they participated in a group baby shower and were given a ?Shower In A Box?, Aug. 25. The event was sponsored by the non-profit organization Operation Shower and Birdies for the Brave, and marks the first time it was held in Connecticut and for wives of submariners.
The women, whose spouses are deployed Sailors, assigned to Commander, Submarine Group Two boats located at the Naval Submarine Base New London, were honored during the group baby shower at the Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum in Groton.
?Attending this event means so very much to me,? said Kimberly Wagner, one of the 20 wives receiving the group baby shower. Wagner is expecting her first child, a boy later this year and welcomes the opportunity to meet the other woman, most who are first-time moms.
Karen McLaughlin, wife of Rear Adm. Michael McLaughlin, Commander, Submarine Group Two spoke with the women about the challenges they face but acknowledged their sacrifices as military wives. ?This event is not only a way to honor these brave women here today, but also pamper them and give them an opportunity to network with other mothers-to-be in an effort to provide a strong support group for these women who rarely have their own families nearby,? said Karen.
Many of the wives are stationed far from family and friends ? making the Operation Shower event a dream come true.
?Family means everything to me, especially with our third baby on the way,? said Amy Fay Wreede, who also participated in the group baby shower. Wreede, like Wagner is also expecting a boy in less than two weeks was pleased to be included in the shower.
The military wives participating in the group shower are expecting a new baby while their spouses are deployed. Operation Shower?s signature ?Shower In A Box? gift of high-quality products for mothers and babies was donated by local and national vendors. Beyond these tangible items, the most meaningful gift may be the unique opportunity for the moms to find comfort and support from other women in the same situation as they celebrate this milestone.
Special guests at the event included representatives from the PGA Tour, including Allison Keller, senior vice president of human resources and Morissey. Tami Scace, director for the Marine Corps Relief Society and Nancy Sypolt, Licensed Professional Counselor, Fleet and Family Support Center, runs the New Parent support program also attended the Operation Shower event to highlight the ongoing programs they have available for mothers.
?We have a variety of classes for expectant mothers, such as Budget for Baby classes,? said Scace. She also added that they offer a visiting nurse program who will make house calls free of charge.
Sypolt also commented on the similar programs they offer to include ?Understanding Birth and Parenting: A Class for Expectant Parents.
Operation Shower is a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and honoring military families by providing joyful baby showers for military wives to ease the burden of deployment, or in cases where spouses are seriously injured. Since the organization?s inception in 2007, Operation Shower has showered more than 400 women on military bases and other locations for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and National Guard.?

"It's clear that the NTC is moving forward to form its government there, and to get its people in place early on, and the U.N. will be there with them, and right after them as conditions permit," U.N. political chief B. Lynn Pascoe told reporters earlier, after briefing the Security Council on Mideast issues.
The United States had been trying for more than two weeks to get the Security Council sanctions committee to unfreeze the U.S. assets to pay for immediate humanitarian aid, but South Africa objected.
