Make Free Stuff Sacks with Tyvek Mailers [Video]

Make Free Stuff Sacks with Tyvek Mailers Want a good way to recycle used Tyvek mailers from FedEx or the Post Office? Tactical blog ITS Tactical shows us how to repurpose one of these mailers into a stuff sack suitable for backpacking, camping, or general storage. In addition to the mailer you'll need a needle and thread, a few sewing pins, a little over a foot of cord, and a cordlock.

All you need to do is make a channel for the cord to run through by folding down the top of the envelope and pinning the cord inside the channel while you sew it shut. This is much easier to grasp from video or photos than text, so watch the video or view the photos at the link below. After that you just need to attach the cordlock to the ends of your cord and turn it inside out.

You'll probably have everything you need on hand for this project except the cordlock; you can get a pack of four from the camping section in WalMart on online at Amazon. You can also do without a cordlock, but it's a little nicer than having to retie a knot every time you open the bag.

This method produces a light, strong, and water resistant bag that can hold lots of gear. Keep in mind this legal caveat from ITS:

This project also warrants a disclaimer: Priority Mail envelopes, whether new or used, are property of the United States Postal Service. They are intended solely for the use of the postal system and, contrary to logic, just because somebody paid to mail you a package in one doesn't make it yours (or theirs).
