Breast cancer? Bilateral mastectomy?I would like to know if any women have had to choose between have a mastectomy or bilateral mastectomy and what they chose and why. I?m having surgery next month and need to make this decision myself and not sure what to do. I?m 27

if bilateral you must do mastectomy in both breast if unilateral do that in advanced breast

Hello Sweetpea,

Sorry you have to make this decision, but I just want you to know that the actual surgery is not hard on the body as you might fear. My wife had a bilateral mastectomy and she stayed overnight in the hospital and was taking Percocet for the entire day after her surgery and at home we started her on Advil.

Make sure your surgeon is one that specializes in breast cancer surgery, I would not feel comfortable having it any other way because they are familiar with that area because it is the only surgery they do.

My wife?s surgeon was very good, let them know before surgery if you are going to do reconstruction, or if you will consider it in the future.

My wife said the actual fear of getting it done was worse than getting it done. It has been over a year since the surgery and she is doing fine with it. Wishing you the best!

Dave
