ZIMBABWE ? HARARE ? Hon Tendai Biti, the MDC Secretary General and Finance Minister?s house was last night attacked by unknown assailants who tried to detonate the durawall. Only marks of the futile attempt are visible to the wall.
Neighbours said the incident happened an hour after midnight when they heard the blast, but were too afraid to come out. Gift Kaseketa, who was at the house said, when he came out in the night, he did not see anyone, and neither did he hear any sound of a vehicle. He said, he was only able to see the dent left by the detonator in the morning.
The MDC does not take this attack lightly given that there have been increasing criticisms and verbal attacks on Hon Biti lately. On Friday, Robert Mugabe and the service chiefs reportedly issued an ultimatum to Hon Biti to review civil servants? salaries saying the issue was now a threat to national security. The ultimatum comes at a time when Mugabe has launched an attack on Hon Biti, blaming him for all the financial problems facing the country.
Addressing thousands of MDC supporters at Zimbabwe Grounds yesterday, Hon Nelson Chamisa, the MDC National Organising Secretary said, the attack on Hon Biti by Mugabe and Zanu PF was unfounded as they knew where proceeds from the diamond rich mines of Chiadzwa are going.
?We have asked that money from the diamond fields go to the treasury to improve the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe, but Zanu PF is reneging. We ask, who is mining in Chiadzwa, all you hear are names ? all Chinese companies, with conspicuous names. Our problem is we have mineral resources that we can use to improve salaries to civil servants, build schools, clinics, hospitals, roads and improve the general living conditions of the people, but Zanu PF does not intend to share the national cake.
?Hon Biti blocked the paths they used to siphon funds from the government for personal use, so they are feeling the pinch, and are furious at him and the MDC.? said Hon Chamisa.
The MDC expects a thorough investigation into the matter to find out who was behind the attack on Hon Biti?s house.
